Bi-weekly insights on maximizing productivity and empowering teams with Notion.
For engineers and others alike, getting the most out of Notion often starts with a solid understanding of its databases. That’s because databases are at the heart of Notion’s functionality.
Hello there, and welcome to this week’s newsletter!
Our team is working hard behind the scenes on our Ultimate Notion Guide for Engineers (the name is still up in the air), so we wanted to give you a sneak peek of what we’re working on.
In today’s newsletter, we’ll dive into the intricacies of Notion’s powerful database feature. We’re excited about this, so let’s get started!
For engineers and others alike, getting the most out of Notion often starts with a solid understanding of its databases. That’s because databases are at the heart of Notion’s functionality.
Let’s take a deeper look at three essential database components: Properties, Filters, and Views.
Properties Databases let you define custom properties that act as attributes for your entries. These properties can hold various types of data, making it great to capture specific details and define the purpose of your database, whether it’s for a wiki, a bug tracker, a team directory, projects, or anything else you can imagine. How well you define the properties in your database will either make or break its usability within your team.
💡Pro Tip: Before creating a property, ask yourself if you and your team really need it. Adding too many properties to a database can confuse your team and discourage them from using Notion efficiently.
FiltersAs the name implies, database filters allow you to sort and filter your data. They can be as simple or advanced as you need, helping you find specific information quickly and easily.
💡Pro Tip: Utilize group filters to organize and categorize related filters. Doing so allows you to construct intricate search queries and refine results according to precise criteria or attributes.
Views Notion’s database views are like versatile lenses that let you look at and interact with your data in different ways. Each view offers a unique setup with filters, sorts, and groupings tailored to your specific needs. With the ability to create multiple views for a single database, you can effortlessly switch between perspectives, making collaboration and data management a breeze for engineering teams.
💡Pro Tip: Combine filters with database views to create views with different purposes for viewing your projects, both for yourself and your team — allowing you to switch from a view that only displays what matters to you, to a view that provides deep insights into the projects happening across the workspace.
Whether you're an engineer or not, understanding and leveraging Notion's database capabilities is essential to harnessing Notion's full potential.
